THE best book I have read in the last year or two. Each chapter is the perfect length, ending before it gets too repetitive and with its own powerful ideas. Instead of the false narrative depression is a chemical imbalance, this book explores how rising unhappiness is a reflection of a faulty way of life, particularly our extrinsically, selfishly motivated American culture. Lays out not just the 8 modern contributions to depression, but also the beginning thoughts for a potential solution. Inspires me to live my life differently and work towards changing culture. So many great quotes and ideas, here's a few: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a sick society" "Happiness is really feeling like you've impacted another human positively" No evidence serotonin levels affect mood, "it has come as close to being proven wrong, he told me, as you ever get in science"
